Web of Science Group’s ScholarOne Launches New Partner Program

New program connects publishers with trusted third parties

Includes UNSILO artificial intelligence following successful pilot

London, UK, Thursday 17 October 2019:   ScholarOne, the comprehensive workflow-management system from the Web of Science Group, a Clarivate Analytics company, is launching a new partner program to connect publishers with trusted third parties.

Keith Collier, Vice President Product Management says: “With up-and-coming vendors entering the marketplace all the time, the ScholarOne partner program supports publishers in working with trusted third parties seamlessly.

“It will connect publishers with more than 15 of our partners, including bioRxiv, UNSILO, Copyright Clearance Center, and Code Ocean to name just a few. It will help publishers to speed up their submission times, build relationships with their authors and reviewers, and streamline their peer review workflow. In addition, partners will get access to extensive API and integration capabilities, and ScholarOne users will have a wider range of options.”

One of the inaugural partners is UNSILO. The partnership with UNSILO follows a successful pilot program conducted over the past year with 43 editors across seven publishers.  During the UNSILO pilot, five AI capabilities that focused on improving the time to screen and peer review papers.

As a result, ScholarOne has already integrated two new capabilities from UNSILO: Key Sentences and Key Words, which give editors additional insight into the manuscript, simplifying their decision to send a paper out for peer review. The ability to view the Key Sentences and Key Words extracted from the manuscript is built directly into the ScholarOne platform workflow, providing editors with assistance at exactly the time and place that they need it.

Collier adds: “The next phase of the partnership will test new automated technical checks. Our initial goal is to reduce the time it takes to make a decision about whether to send the manuscript to peer review, and to reduce the number of manuscripts that go to peer review and end up rejected.”

In addition to providing these services to editors, the UNSILO integration may also provide checks directly to authors at the point of submission, allowing them to correct errors or provide missing data before the manuscript reaches an editor. According to early results from an UNSILO survey of editorial offices, over 80% of respondents would like software that is able to help authors run their own manuscripts through technical checks before editorial offices receive the submissions. The survey also indicates that over half of editorial offices return up to 25% of manuscript submissions to authors in order to address issues found during the earliest technical checks, before submissions are passed to an editor or reviewer. Another 20% return up to 50% of submissions, and 10% return up to 75%. These results indicate significant need for the type of workflow solutions that ScholarOne and UNSILO are working together to provide.
